DT, there is a difference between special order and buying one that isn't in stock. Special orders cost more and take a long time. A special order is an item that isn't displayed on the floor and considered stock.
Neither Home Depot nor Sears hold very much stock on the island. Sears has a bit more. Sears, the one I have ended up using, has a warehouse on Oahu, and it takes one to two weeks if the item is there, a month if it's in California. So what you want to do if there's definitely nothing in stock is to ask if any of your picks are in stock on Oahu, for the shorter wait.
I recently had to replace both a dishwasher and a stove, got them both at Sears; the dishwasher was on Oahu and it took about 10 days.
Another option is Lowes, but they don't deliver to this side, so you'd have to haul it. If you want to shop Lowes, you can go online and put in the zip code for Kona, look at models, and then call the store to find out what's in stock. You can buy it over the phone even.
