If you didn't pay tax on your new car on the mainland you are supposed to pay GET here, but there is a way to avoid that. If you owned the car for 90+ days (that includes the time of the shipping too) than it's not considered a new car anymore. Just make sure there is more than 90 days between the invoice date and the HI registration date.
