I don't want to take away your right to bear arms. Rifles are quite a different issue than handguns. When the constitution was drafted, handguns were not very viable as a weapon.
In this country approximately 500 children are killed by handguns every year. These are accidental shootings where either the child kills himself or a sibling or a friend. One study showed that 36% of children in households with handguns knew where their parent (usually the father) keeps their gun and 25% admitted to handling the gun.
So why are the vast majority of handgun owners men? A long, hard barrel that reliably ejects a projectile. You can draw your own conclusions.
As far as protection of the home, a shotgun is far preferable to a handgun.
