The best furniture store in the Hilo area I have found so far is a place named simply Bamboo & Teak Furniture at 180 Makaala Street, across from Nick's Garage and near HITCO. Kona has more selection but for Hilo this place has a wide range of pieces and the prices are not too outrageous.
There are a couple of antique shops in Hilo which carry furniture; the one located a half a block farther up the street from the Hilo Farmers Market has quite few nice old items in there.
Furniture coming in from overseas is supposed to be fumigated in the shipping containers to kill pests like bedbugs, termites, and so on. If I buy an item used (like, say, a cool old lamp) then I put it inside a huge black contractor trash bag, throw in a bunch of moth crystals, seal the item and crystals inside the bag, and let it sit in full sun for several days before unbagging, airing out, and bringing into the house. Between the heat of the sun cooking the contents and the fumes from the moth crystals so far I have not had any problems with bedbugs, termites, or other pestilential vermin coming in via Trojan horses such as used furniture and suchlike. I know this method at least works to kill cockroaches which were hiding inside objects because I have found their corpses in the bags. For big items sealing 'em in a shipping container (or any similar reasonably closed space) and letting them bake in the sun with a couple pounds of moth crystals seems to work equally well, at least so far.
