Fuel Tax Revenue at a critical moment - Testify
#4
Regarding testimony and support for the Fuel Tax Revenue (FTR) proposal

Aloha everyone,

You have been receiving FoPF alerts calling for calls and or email testimony in support of the important FTR proposal as it proceeds in the state legislature. Mahalo for stepping up and taking a minute to support this effort.

If the legislature approves HP 1626 we can have a FTR grant in aid program in place this year with potential for grants in the next budget (2012). If the legislature does not approve HB 1626 it will have to be submitted in the 2012 session and we will start all over again.

These alerts for calls and/or emails of support will be ongoing. The reason is that at each successive stage in the process there will be moments when support will be needed for this to succeed. Currently we are asking for the Chairman of the Finance Committee to schedule the bill for advancement at the committee level. He may or he may not. If not then that is basically that for 2011. If he does HB 1626 will have a committee hearing and the committee will or won't send it to the House floor. If it makes it to the house floor and proceeds with approval it has to go to the State Senate. If it passes in legislature it will then need to be signed or vetoed by the Governor.

So please be aware that as this progresses that each stage becomes increasingly important. Honolulu does not think about Puna or the BIg Island a lot.

I have been told that when floor testimony comes on line that Dominic Yagong and Fred Blas will fly to Honolulu to testify in person. That is wonderful. Both can be effective in representing the issue. We can't have them doing this though without strong evidence of community support.

So at this time our allies in the county and Rep. Faye Hanohano are in motion. Requests for testimony are not casual. They may be short notice. Some events may only have a couple days warning.

The FTR Road Maintenance Grant-in-Aid proposal will help you and help your neighbors.

I want to thank everyone for taking to time to send in testimony/support and hope you will all continue to do so.
