proposal: require fire sprinklers
#4
Residential fire sprinklers are a good thing. If people were legally allowed to do their own plumbing or electrical here the cost of construction, at least for owner builders, would come down considerably. Fire sprinklers are not inherently expensive. A fire sprinkler head costs about $8 from a mainland plumbing supply house. They do usually operate at a higher water pressure then household but I think they are available for lower pressure situations as well. Considering the loss of life and property fire sprinklers are a good investment. It shouldn't cost $6,000 to install $1,000 worth of work.

I've long been amazed and disappointed that the state does not allow an individual to do their own plumbing and electric work. Everywhere else I have worked it is allowed. If you don't do the work right it doesn't pass inspection. Simple.

It seems to be based on an assumption of incompetence and I resent that. The law assumes us to be competent enough to defend ourselves in a court of law but not competent to glue a couple pieces of ABS together or sweat a copper joint. The law here appears to be driven by the unions. I wish someone would file suit on the subject. I think the state would lose.
Assume the best and ask questions.
