I read the story from Texas in 2007. Wasn't that alarming to me. The group was eleven miles out in the boonies and one young man wanted to leave. They had carpooled in and apparently the head guy didn't want to drive him out immediately. Personally, in hindsight, I think he should have. Considering that the young man committed suicide a few weeks later it would appear that he was generally in a fragile state. Pretty hard to know who is or who isn't suicidal.
Going back through 2007 the Boy Scouts had 32 members die while engaged in scouting activities.
I think that people sitting naked in circles and banging on drums and talking about their feelings has been in Puna long before this group arrived. Sounds rather Puna appropriate actually.
