The social damage done is horrific. Most of it just isn't reported outside of the local mainstream news media. That's why the comparison sounds as unlikely as it does. It's not.
I can understand why it would sound like hyperbole.
The activist sites, mapinc.org among others collect these news stories and post them on the web.
I'm not asking anyone to take my word for the validity of the comparison, but having read the stories daily from around the country for over fifteen years, one sees perhaps a bit more of the actual picture.
