What's up tigerlily? (Sorry, been waiting my whole life for the chance to say that. 
Some folks think Puna is the best place in the world. And some don't. It's personal preference/lifestyle, so due diligence is essential to making the right decision. That means living here for a while to get the lay of the land.
Which brings me to my next point: I think many folks who live here will agree (well, maybe not the realtors) that it's a good idea to rent before buying so you can get a feel for the area, figure out where you fit best, etc. Standing in your shoes in the current situation, it's exactly what I would do. My humble two cents.
