I think that this can happen anywhere and isn't a sign of poor police presence in Puna. It's a huge district and sparsely populated. I think people need to be aware of their surroundings on the red road just like anywhere else. It sucks that this happened, it's bad luck, hopefully they will catch who did it, but it doesn't mean I will carry extra protection or stay inside and lock the doors. I have been in much scarier places. I also think that an occasional sobriety check-point leaving Kalapana is a good idea.
