For me, one reason to buy locally is to be able to gain advice, knowledge, and support along with your purchase. I have a couple of DIY home PV/solar systems that would not have been possible without the support of a few good local suppliers.
I did my research online, bought a few things online, bought the rest locally and made sure I had a knowledgeable solar electrician hook it up (one of them was Solar Raye)...after all this is electricity we're dealing with and it can be dangerous.
The best part is that we are now energy independent, use far less electricity because we are more conscious of it, and don't ever worry about the "power going out" like when we were living on the grid.
