Ocean sushi is imho average at best. Miwa has a very bad reputation with Japanese nationals who visit from Japan regularly, and I agree. It's overpriced for what you get. I've never eaten at Nihonkan but it also has a less-than-stellar reputation.
The best kept secret in Hilo is absolutely Ichiban; it's hands down the best sushi I've had on this side of the island, and the prices are reasonable for what you get. (The fish slices are a bit small but the quality is very good.)
Oh yes, stay away from MIghty Sushi across from Malama. The worst I've ever had.
Also, a little birdie told me there will soon be another sushi presence in Pahoa soon. It won't be fish, rather different kinds of rolls, etc. I'm told it'll be sold inside another existing restaurant. I know the "chef" is a Japanese transplant who used to have a restaurant in NY. We'll see how that goes but I'm hopeful!
