There isn't a lot of infrastructure in Puna, therefore few jobs. Go outside Puna (Hilo area) and the unemployment rate is pretty close to the rest of the nation. I hear a lot of transplants complaining that there aren't any jobs on the Big Island. That isn't really true. There may not be jobs in the fields that you are experienced with or at the salary level you are accustomed to. But there are jobs here. I don't think that being a haole is going to make a difference at most places if you've really truly left the mainland behind.
