I personally skeptical that a hybrid is competitive overall when you factor in replacing the battery and maintaining two separate drive technologies. I also concur that the Geo Metro seems to represent a peak in economical transportation that we seem to have left behind. My parents owned two of them over the years and loved them. They got 50 mpg on long trips. Meanwhile the "SmartCar" gets only in the 30s I think. I just remember thinking that it cost a fortune, was a little toy, and got worse mileage than the Geo Metros my folks had in the 90s.
Give me a very modestly sized and powered IC car over a hybrid any day.
