Yes, addiction is a problem, the severity of which varies with the particular drugs. (This is actually a medical issue and should be dealt with as such, but that's another discussion entirely.)
People will get high with whatever is easily obtained at a reasonable price. Eradicate one, and something else will take its place.
Consider the options: Weed is generally less harmful to the user, its production has limited environmental impact, and its "marketplace" tends towards networks-of-friends who deal in small quantities of boutique varietals. Meth permanently rewires the brain, poisons the manufacturing site with a toxic soup, and requires the support of a heavily armed cartel to arrange the large-scale production and international transportation.
Which one do you want in your community?
You know what by your logic then there should be a glue sniffing epidemic, easy to obtain, cheap, etc. Hey pcp is cheap, lsd is cheap but it isn't catching on like meth. It is what the drug does in relation to what the user is looking for that actually determines the market for any specific drug. There is always something cheaper to get loaded on and the cheapest thing is not always the most popular. I mean if you hold your breath long enough you could get really high and that is free but it hasn't caught on like meth or tobacco.
It is not one or the other. Ice and pot are not interchangeable. It is a stretch to think that they are even related to each other, as far as the sensations obtained from each. As if, potheads would turn to meth because pot was being cracked down on. Pot is being cracked down on and potheads still smoke pot. Pot smokers aren't trying to stay up for weeks. They are interested in having a laugh and relaxing. There are all kinds of ways to get high but they are not interchangeable nor are they all addictive for the same reasons. I won't start denying some people get addicted to weed but it is a psychological emotional issue it is not a full blown physical addiction like heroin, crack, alcohol or meth.
Or perhaps you are saying dealers and growers will turn to meth production which is way off base as well. Dealing with pot smokers is a whole different ball game from dealing with meth addicts. Meth addicts don't sleep and thus will want meth at all hours. Meth addicts get aggressive and violent. Meth addicts steal from people. Not to mention, meth addicts die as opposed to marijuana which has not one reported death due to an overdose. So the meth dealer has a different conscience about what they do. They deal death. They kill people for money. Marijuana in the worst case scenario might cause a lazy bastard to be even lazier but it will never kill anyone like alcohol, heroin, crack, meth, tobacco, huffing glue etc.
Pot dealers/growers are not even in the drug business. The plant is food. It is hardly even processed just grown and dried.
