Peru earthquake

6.3 is not a strong quake. TheyÔve changed the scales over the years. When I was 18, a 7.1 in LA was a huge quake, and a not quite 7 brought down the Nimitz Freeway and part of the Bay Bridge. A 7.5 here in the 70Ôs generated a big local tsunami.

7Ôs are not a big deal any more. At 8 and above is what one looks at to generate a tsunami. Remember that an 8 is 10 times stronger than a 7.

I donÔt understand exactly what they did to the scale, but IÔm sure someone else here can explain it. I just have noticed that itÔs about 1 magnitude less in effect for the same number as it used to be. Loma Prieta was in 1989 and that was under the old system.
