There are a lot of mechanics and car dealers in Hilo that like the road conditions in HA
The difference being that you enjoy the choices of a free market, and your mechanic is accountable to you for the money spent.
Let's put a dollar figure on it. I think it's about $1000/year. If you pay that money to County (in the form of an LID for the roads, higher property taxes), it disappears into the budget, maybe your roads will be maintained, maybe not, but County will not be accountable, and you'll enjoy all the trimmings (higher taxes, more crime, flattened pets).
I maintain that the correct solution is "fewer trips to town". If there was a farmers' market withing walking (bicycling, dirtbike) distance, I could go to town half as often, so my car repairs would last twice as long. However, local farmers' markets simply can't afford the costs of "compliance" with County regulations -- effectively forcing more trips to town, exactly as intended by the PCDP.
Agree with Ken: you want paved roads and full services, move to a place that has those things. Perhaps Kona would be more "appropriate".
