quote:fishenjim - here's a suggestion, but unfortunately not the right time for it.
Getting my first view of the stars in Hawaii, caught a few glimpses the first 8 nights but with it clearing tonight I'm starting to see the night sky Hawaii is known for,yes it is beautiful.
In April or May, on a clear and moonless evening, drive out north of Hilo on Hwy 19 to Laupahoehoe. After the first two gulches there's a small rest area on the side of the highway where you can stop and stare out at the ocean. In April and May, the Galactic centre is rising in the evening and as long as the sky is dark you will get a view that will blow your mind away.
You'll need to wait a few minutes for your eyes to become dark adapted, but it is worth it.
Or you could head up towards Mauna Kea. The view at the VIS is stunning and actually better than the summit as your eyes work better at 9,000 feet.
