Mahalo Opihikao for the wonderful thread. Plenty happening this year with the storms and lava flows. It has been a pretty good one two punch so far delivered to the Puna community, and the flow has maybe just started. The past few weeks really have been encouraging to see the community come together, albeit more can be done.
Some good things I have noticed making positive differences of late are:
1) Pahoa's cross country team was given Shoes to run in and now they are all running their PR'S. They look sharp, more as a team wearing shirts that say smile every mile. A shoe company from kona is coming out this 7th or 8th to pass and give shoes to these boys and girls. Maybe other keiki in the area affected by the flow could use good footwear, hats, breathing masks, and a few outfits could help in many ways physically, mentally, and emotionally.
2) being prepared means different things to different people sometimes depending on their economic situation. So things like gas, water and propane are nice to have plenty of when the lights do go out or times get even harder. Yet for some the extra gas cans, legal propane tanks, and water jugs can be difficult for fixed income folks to go buy.
3) Batteries and working flashlights, candles, and home schooling books or projects.
4) most out here live on catchment and may need to syfen water from their tanks in the future or boil water so 5 gallon buckets, hoses, and cooking pots could help some.
5) For something I noticed during the prolonged power outage after storm Iselle was how difficult laundry became so any ideas would help in that department would be nice.
6)help with transportation to and from centers helping?. Or a few more home deliveries.
I'm sure help can come in many ways, shapes, and sizes. The important things are that the ones needing help are getting it if its available. I don't want to list them all and sound helpless to some so I will spare you. Thank you Ophikao.
