In short methane may not be a fossil fuel depending on where it comes from. Using more methane from sources that are not fossil will reduce fossil fuel consumption.

Once you have CH2O there a few ways to then convert it to Methane.
Notice these started with CO2, consumed H2S and formed elemental S
