the Alenuiha'ha channel may not exactly be anything to sneeze at when traversing by boat, but in response to the pessimism regarding the feasibility of some sort of ferry system being in doubt due to prohibitively rough conditions...
...all i know is that back in the early 90's i had the good fortune to make a trek from Wales to Dublin via ferry carrying both passengers and vehicles. that was a VERY dark and stormy night across the notorious Irish Sea. winds howling, driving rain, decks tilting and heaving, some passengers heaving as well, me almost included if not for the Dramamine. granted it was a huge ferry boat, but they apparently have it down like commuter's clockwork over there.
