When I dropped my daughter off every day at Keaau High School she was embarrassed by the rusted out junker I was driving. But, it was all I could afford. All the other kids were getting out of much newer/nicer cars. The percentage of students those years getting free or reduced lunches (income based) was over 90%. We weren't one of them. I never checked to see if we qualified but I'm 99% sure we didn't (thank God). Some of the other students had no way to get to school so they hitchhiked/walked approximately 5 miles each way to get there and back EVERY DAY.
There is a big dichotomy here. Over 90% on free or reduced lunches, some of those parents could afford new cars and some of them couldn't afford any form of transportation to get their kids to school.
There are many layers to this problem.
