Maybe a different view or opinion here:
Let's say Maunakea is all that planet searchers say it is? Maybe the top of maunakea is one of the finest places in the world for these telescopes?. Let's say nothing happened for 5-10 years, no building anymore including this Godzilla. Now in that time would maunakea lose value or gain value, would the hawaiian people possibly be offered sweeter or better benefits?. Time equals money, this could be why the fast pace to get these telescopes in place to begin with? JMO here, if this TMT project was to cost 1.4 billion, who exactly was going to pay for it(Canadians, Japanese)?. How much would it cost annually to offer every island high school senior keiki resident a college education at say UHH for the next twenty years?.
Economic prejudice is on the rise, especially here in Hawaii. As the income and investment differential grows, one of the few ways to help everyone with an equal opportunity in life, may be to try and educate everyone equally. Then again Maunakea carries great importance to so many just the way she is, protection from man may be what is needed today.
