Hope everyone is preparing and will stay safe w/the upcoming storm. Driving around HPP today almost a year after Tropical Storm Iselle, I still see lots of albezias that were here a year ago. We have a brand new Road Assessment Committee, but no committee to address the more important safety issues of logging what TMK's have the large albezias located along main drags and contacting those owners to take action. It'd be a big but important job for whomever took that on. Those trees will continue to threaten our power lines otherwise. We still have many in HPP's easements.
After the storm, we were very fortunate HELCO removed those huge trees off our main drags pronto. We wouldn't have been able to handle most of that on our own. The road reflectors that are missing or damaged haven't been replaced yet. Makuu and Paradise have a real safety issue w/out those reflectors for night time driving and worse yet when it's raining. The RTSC requested the GM look into that a couple of months or more ago.
It's a shame Civil Defense's Darryl Oliveira wasn't asked to speak at our last membership mtg, during our hurricane season. I was invited to a small mtg w/him a few months back, and he said they had learned a lot after Iselle. Communication is key. He was supposed to be a guest speaker but I guess the park and library issue took precedence. The board was reminded but made different choices. Instead Darryl spoke at our July 2015 "Board" mtg w/minimal members present. During a conversation w/him after the board mtg, he said he'd show up anytime to speak and to just give him a call.
I feel more confidence knowing that HPP NW's emergency volunteers, CERT and HPP's Emergency Action Committee have been working over the past year to get emergency plans in place. We had nothing before then. Kudos to them for working so diligently. Also the NW Albezia Committee for all their hard work guiding members in exterminating their albezias.
