The opposition to this "smell" seems to have some ulterior motive to it
This has always been true -- as noted, PGV might smell, but then so does the active volcano, the albizzia bloom, the rotting pig carcass dumped on the roadside, etc.
Once upon a time I lived near an ethanol production facility. When the wind blew the "wrong" way, the stink was everywhere. Oddly enough, the folks who worked at the plant didn't think there was anything wrong -- possibly because they were busy working and drawing a paycheck.
