A lot of us in this forum have homes in subdivisions that people in Hilo consider "dangerous". How many of us actually feel in danger? I certainly don't. I mind my own business and it seems to be live and let live. Yes there have been a couple of murders and one armed hostage situation in Eden Roc in the last few years, but they were almost entirely drug culture or domestic disturbance related. No shooting random strangers. Just like in Canada, I feel no need to carry a firearm in Puna. Maybe a big stick for the occasional dog that is running wild and needs a reminder to show respect, but that's about it (even most of them are all bark, but you want to be ready) I think I'm more in danger from a foot going down a lava crack in my back yard.
