We need to replace our microwave so I went to HD and was admiring a nice shiny Samsung model they had. I've probably been living under an alibzia tree or something but I didn't even realize Samsung made appliances. Best yet, it was on sale and the sale ends tomorrow! I'm the opposite of an impulse shopper so I took a picture of the microwave plus the deets and looked for reviews online. What I found out was 1) The microwave was about $50 cheaper on amazon with free prime shipping and 2) The reviewers crucified it. Over 50% rated it 1 star. On the other hand, a similar (and cheaper) GE model scored 4.5 stars and further research determined it was also a Consumer Reports recommended model.
It looks like that for smaller appliances at least, online is the way to go if you can get it shipped for free.
