I will say this. My brother worked at the IRTF for something like 15 years. When this topic comes up he does confirm that in the early days the observatories were fairly heavy handed and possessive and if they had had their way access to the summit would have been more restricted. There are legitimate grievances. However the response of the protesters in prosecuting these grievances is comically misguided and I stand by my earlier assertions that these protesters are not truly representative of most Hawaiians.
