The Y shape ( I call it Hi-Y) has a somewhat interesting story.
Sophie and I went through several iterations of floor plans, including a cluster of MFH and HPM kit houses, all modified to meet our list of requirements. This was all before we had a priece of property in Hawaii. Well, one morning, while still sipping coffee, Sophie asks to see the latest plan. After a few moments of thoughtful study, she remarks, " I just don't see why I can't have a view from the exercise room." At that time, she was doing about 2 hours per day therapy. Remember, this question and we didn't even have property, let alone property with a view. So in a fit of husbandly "superiority" I grabbed a blank sheet of paper and hastily drew each room end to end, kinda like a long trailer, and said, "There!". That provided the spark to realize that by bending into a Y shape it was actually possible. Scrap that set of plans and start anew.
Msurf I can't give you a meaning concrete cost. It seems slab work varys with area, lava vs rock fill on soil etc. As for basics, I hired a very local crew, paid hourly. I purchase all the material, rebar, mesh, lumber etc. Concrete itself is about $140 per cuyd due to transportation cost. So my $/ft is of little meaning in other circumstances. I have heard discussion of pricing ranging from $8 to $16 sf, but I'm not familar with the individual details. Hope this helps some.
