I was raised to believe that locks were to keep honest people out. That being said I like the Neighborhood Watch and also the bumper sticker thing to denote residents.
I lived on a one lane gravel road for a long time. There were 13 of us on the road. It was every ones habit to wave down unfamiliar cars and ask who they were headed to see and offer directions. It was a friendly and non invasive thing to do, rather neighborly and to offer directions. In 21 years not one burglary there, of course the road was only 1 1/2 miles long.
