Unfortuately it is very disturbing, but what's maybe more disturbing is not knowing about it and being totaly unprepared when the stuff hits the fan. With gas on its way to $4 per gallon and the Dow Jones dropping 200 yesterday due to fears about oil, it can be debated that we're starting down that other side of the bell curve. Conservation is key right now to delay it's effect. The US actually reached domestic Peak Oil in 1970, but we didn't know it until about 1976. Remember the first oil crisis? Our solution was to import more and more oil from other countries. Since 1970 the US has produced less oil every year than the year before. We won't know if we actually reached GLOBAL Peak Oil until years later looking in the rear view mirror. I read months ago that demand has actually passed supply. And we're not even accounting for what another Gulf Coast hurricane could do to our refining cabability. So this is what I meant by this could be a very important thread to make people aware and bring the community together. A close community is VERY important.

Co-ops would be great for not only food, but perhaps to buy photovoltaics in bulk. The problem is solar and wind products are going to be in huge demand, much larger than the supply in the future. The supply is already low because Germany and Japan are buying solar panels like crazy. China is buying up not only oil, but resources such as steel and concrete. It is quite possible that it will be impossible to even buy solar and wind products in Hawaii in as little as 5 years. What people don't realize is that it takes a lot of oil to even produce alternative energy products. You have to use oil (diesel) to mine the resources, the silica, copper, aluminum, etc. Then it has to be delivered to the manufacturer by truck. Then it takes electricity usually created from natural gas or coal to manufacture the alternative energy products. Then it has to be shipped thousands of miles to Hawaii. So to make a long story short, the people preparing NOW will be in the best shape. Those who have a wait and see attitude may find themselves ... well you know. The 1976 oil crisis was nothing, we're headed into the last oil crisis. It's not a matter of if, but when.
