Hi Lew,
My husband was born and raised in Portland also! When we married we lived in Portland for almost 2 years. As a California girl I couldn't take the low grey day in and day out with only 2 months of what I loosely describe as summer. I thought I would appreciate the rain in Portland as it seemed to me to be better than the 7 month droughts of No. Cal. Well the rain was dribbled out in 1/8 inch grey days for 10 months.
Perhaps you could rent a place in Puna for a month and decide. It is always summer in Puna rain or shine! Yes most of the rain comes in the evening or early morning, but there are days on end of rain, but it is still summer. The clouds are rarely of the low grey variety from our experience, and usually the puffy white ones sailing by.
These are subjective descriptions so I suggest one month on each side to decide. My thought is that you will come to love the east side unless you are looking for perpetual vacation life on the beach. Aloha, Mella L
