Flashed my lights at someone on 130 the other night as it was just getting dark. He was in very dark, big pickup truck. He flashed his lights back at me like 5 times really fast, then left them off. I took it to mean, "Don't tell me what to do." (An attitude I find here like nowhere I've ever lived.) Everywhere else I've ever lived, flashing one's lights was the polite way to remind someone it was dark, and tell them you had hard time seeing them. It was even taught to us in driver's ed. Always welcomed elsewhere.
I guess this is just one more Hawaii vs mainland thing, or maybe rural vs. city? Not sure. Then again, when I grew up in Maryland, used country roads all the time, and it was a standard practice.
