It requires less energy to launch a satellite into orbit closer to the equator. South Point, like Cape Canaveral has a large expanse of ocean east of any launch facility they might choose near the coast. Should something go wrong with a launch, it shouldn't affect a populated area on the ground, but fall harmlessly into the sea.
I'm sure there are people already concocting one in a trillion scenarios where an off course launch vehicle could potentially land on a coffee tree, macnut tree, or God forbid, South Point Pizza, Beer & Billiards.
