At this moment while humans in industrial nations continue pumping CO2 into the air exacerbating the global climate crisis, Big Island is one small corner of the world counteracting warming trends as each new fissure opens. Perhaps we should request federal funds for our defense of the planet, and assisting homeowners who live along American coastlines facing the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The businesses which operate there too. We are a glimmer of hope that existing oceanfront properties might remain above the waterline. You're welcome. Concurrently, while low lying areas, such as atolls in the Pacific, beaches in Florida, or Gulf Coast states all make plans to move structures inland as rising seas inundate their shorelines, Big Island is as the bumper sticker says: "Gettin' Bigger Every Day."

We are the archetype for a land mass rising faster than sea levels climb. Kevin Costner and Waterworld may have had it right, Big Island is Dryland, the place everyone searches for, the dream that rises above the waves.
