While on a cruise of the Hawaiian Islands years ago, perhaps 1991 we saw an awesome sight. The captain of the ship announced over the loud speaker around 11PM for those interested in seeing the lava flow step outside to the port side. We saw lava flowing into the ocean and these huge pink/peach clouds climbing into the sky. I was so ill at ease as we were in a large ship and it felt like we were much much to close to the shore. I was afraid we were going to scrape the bottom. One night at dinner at the captains table I asked about this and learned that the ocean is so deep off that coast there was no fear we would touch the bottom. The earth birthing the land we will never forget that sight.
