So whether or not this is a new eruption or not is an item of contention within USGS currently (6/3) - some say clearly yes it's a new eruption, others like Dr Jim K, saying it's all of a matter of semantics that really has nothing to do with the task of tracking this event.

As for economic impacts, I haven't seen the Kona air quality problem mentioned here, but should be added to the tally.

My guess is there are a lot more issues (the scanner some days is dominated by calls about breathing difficulties) but that these leads are being buried by the local media in order to limit the damage to the economy.
