From glinda: "what would be the drawbacks of encouraging county/state to open up a viewing area at the flow’s edge at the end of Red Road?..."
Good contribution, glinda. A thoughtful and convincing appeal. Unfortunately the critics to lava viewing (from the ground) are persistent and likely to influence officials mulling a lava viewing site. Opinions saying let's not do this generally go far in Hawaii County.

An extraordinary sight, close in majesty to seeing a solar eclipse.
Yet a poster above equates this as a "Polynesian Disneyland," implying vacuous tourists bumbling around looking for cheap entertainment. Another poster is convinced that lava viewers will want to tour the disaster center to see the evacuees.
Another poster in the CoH Civil Defense thread wrote: "This is a massive and unprecedented disaster...(if this happened in California), ...entire populous within a 20 mile radius would pack up....(our failure to do the same should be) regarded as absolutely insane..."
Vacuous criticism and a distraught commentator engaged in major fear mongering. Their wisdom might rule the day.
