I reread your OP, and now realize when you said “am I alone in thinking this isn’t right?” that it didn’t describe the extent of your action (consideration of the situation at hand and leaving it at that), but was a pause - -
As Rob says, when you “assume the best and ask questions” it can broaden the discussion, inviting both predictable as well as surprisingly unexpected perspectives. Your observation certainly transformed a simple question, sometimes for better (sometimes for worse) into a spirited debate.
