However, the Little Ice Age was mostly confined to Europe rather than being a global phenomenon (which the major ice ages were, tens of thousands of years ago), the summers were not strongly affected, and researchers have at least one more likely explanation: volcanoes. Large eruptions of volcanoes send enough ash particles into the high atmosphere to absorb and reflect sunlight back into space, cooling the planet slightly."
