"Hawaii Island isn't itself anymore. Lava and quakes have transformed it in interesting ways...."
Sorry to be on a downer, but from an ocean recreation standpoint the changes in 30 years (and two eruption episodes), the outcome has been virtually nothing but losses. The new features of interest do little to mitigate....
The Kalapana shore before its destruction in 1990 spanned nearly 1.5 miles from Left Point to the giant tide pool by Walter's Store, with numerous features in between. Think of Pohoiki-Shacks before their loss several months ago. Multiply that span by 4. That's the size of the original Kalapana recreation zone. With 2 surf breaks that matched anything on Oahu's south shore.
Kalapana gone, Shacks gone, the giant tide pools at Kapoho gone. New Pohoiki mediocre for swimming, surfing.
Little surprise that most tourists don't find much to do on the Puna coast anymore. Let's keep working on getting the Pahoa pool open......
