Well I slogged thru HotPE's link and am waiting on bananheads book tip.
Losing steam though. I can see why anyone can claim anything is sacred in Hawaii regardless of any historical support...
Glinda, I am happy you have found a life long pursuit in this area. I am unable to romanticize a Stone Age culture of such violence, sexism, and classism, so I don't have a viable hook in those waters...
I am also glad hula thrives in modern and more traditional forms. Though it doesn't resonate with me personally, I can see that it is among the best, if not the best, remnant of Hawaiian culture and worthy of celebration and continuation.
Can haoles become native hawaiian practitioners? I can find nothing about the process for "certification" or requirements, or whatever.
Thanks to all for the pointers. I am not done trying to understand what is meant by the Hawaiian religion, but will be downshifting.
Cheers,
Kirt
