Puna is awesome! My husband and I visited in mid-January of this year into early February, and it is truly a magical area! We just moved last month to San Francisco from a rural area near Santa Fe, New Mexico, and hope to be able to come out to the Puna and Hilo areas again for visits! For awhile we were considering relocating to the Big Island, but at this stage of the game it works out better for us to be in San Francisco and come out to the Big Island from time to time. At least it will be easier to do that from here than New Mexico. We spent almost all of our time in the Puna district because we liked it so much - we only got half-way up to the North Shore! The Waipio Valley up there is supposed to absolutely amazing, and we hope to get there the next time we visit!
Anyhow, if you love natural beauty, and simple pleasures, then exploring the Puna district is wonderful. The "red road" can't be beat for just about the most scenic drive ever, and there are lots of places where one can stop and enjoy the ocean views. The warm volcanic pools, Kehena Beach, the town of Pahoa itself, taking a trip to the Volcanoes National Park, going up to Hilo on Wednesdays and Saturdays for their totally wonderful farmers' market, also the Makuu market right near Pahoa on Sundays, are all highly recommended. It's really about tuning into the incredible natural beauty, and of course the wonderful people of the Big Island. The aloha spirit is real, and I will always remember that. We do hope to be out again for visits in the not-too-distant future! ATA direct to Hilo out of Oakland helps in this regard, now that we are back in the Bay Area.
