To assert that the host culture here is "unscientific" is just plain ignorant.

There are exceptional people in all cultures. America sent people to the moon with science and engineering. That doesn’t mean all Americans are capable of traveling to the moon, and it wouldn’t necessarily be an insult to say some Americans are “unscientific.” All current Americans are not endowed with a scientific background simply by being born here.

Many of us have lived through two recent lava flows In Puna. We continued our day to day lives, jobs, some of us had loses and had to start over. We did what we had to do and survived. That doesn’t make all of us geologists or volcanologists. I may know a whole lot more about lava than I did 10 years ago, probably more than the average person in Delaware, but I’m not insulted if someone says, “you, you’re no geologist!”
