Of course this is all silly make-work for all concerned. A cover to use so as to deploy a beefed up police presence that will ultimately deter anyone from doing more than being relegated to standing on the side of the road at Puu Huluhulu.
Over the years there has been very large objects hauled up to the mountain, and before the highway improvements they did warrant the blocking of the road entirely. But the road is way bigger/wider than in the days when it was barely a one lane automobile accident waiting to happen. But hey, a D-Whatever is big and hauling 'em up to the mountain will be slow and arduous. And, of course, will take precedent over any protest or other use of the highway corridor.
Of course there are work arounds. But it's a big mountain, and approaching the summit access road from other than the Saddle Road is a long and demanding way to get around. Not that it isn't doable, but it sure would cut out all the weekend warriors. All the casual, let's go and protest for a day crowd. Though, if seriously determined, folks can get around all the police show 'n tell.
But, all said, it is obviously a planned tactic in resistance mitigation and should work. After all the state has the upper hand. Hopefully the Hawaiian community won't fall prey to this maneuver and find another way to express themselves. Otherwise, I fear, this entire exercise will ultimately make them look the fool.
