why are these protestors against progress
They aren't against progress at all. They just don't want it near their house. It's right there at the top is this thread.
I maintain that this problem should be left to the free market. As electricity becomes more scarce, the price will go up. When the price goes high enough, people will respond by using less power, or perhaps by moving to a place with cheaper power.
