It's not a hassle to permit it at all, but if you don't want to permit it then it still would be a carport in the eyes of the appraiser when you sell it. The buyer would get a loan accordingly. However, and that is another subject, you will have to disclose it at the time of the sale that the carport was converted to a garage without permit and might be not up to Code. IMHO, I would get a permit, the value of your house will increase with a permitted garage.
