Local government was complicit, so Ige and Kim were also stopping a telescope from being built. We should erect a monument to their stupidity as well. Perhaps a giant stone sculpture of a broken down tent blocking the entrance to the county parking lot.

ETA: as to military applications, the only one that comes to mind would be looking at or tracking things in orbit. Neither offends me.
