I have been kind of amazed we have any recycling program at all and wonder where the "recycled" material goes. Recycle doesn't stop when a person drops off their bottles and newspapers at the recycling center. It starts there. So then what happens?

I am aware of no manufacturing or reuse process underway on the islands except some minimal use of crushed glass and Maui has a struggling HDPE plastic lumber facility. Does anyone know if our recyclables are baled and shipped back to the mainland? or processed here for some useful purpose?
