That's really interesting, thanks for posting it. I had read about another company that successfully tested the ability to use a regular cheap terrestrial cellphone (didn't even require a smartphone, like an old flip phone would do) via space by using a mini cell "tower" installed on one of the SpaceX Dragon cargo resupply capsules for the ISS specifically for the experiment. But they were only looking for (and they achieved) 2G speeds. Basically, there will never be any dead zones, if there isn't a terrestrial tower available the phone automatically 'roams' to one in orbit.
